The Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg : World’s Biggest Toy Train Set By Frederick & Gerrit Braun

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 04:03 AM PDT

The Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany has 700 trains, 4,000 automobiles, 165,000 trees and 250,000 individual lights and a track lengh of 5.6 miles has set the world record for the largest miniature railroad. The Miniatur Wunderland has been build during approx. 500,000 working hours and it costed 8.7 Million Euros (in April 07). In June 2007 the 4,000,000th visitor has been welcomed. The most expensive train in the stable is the Marklin $500 Big Boy. Made mostly of metal, it is the world's largest model steam locomotive.

Here's Frederick & Gerrit Braun creation "Miniatur Wunderland":

This is the world's biggest train set which covers 1,150 square meters (12,380 square feet), features almost six miles of track and is still not complete.

Twin brothers Frederick and Gerrit Braun, 41, began work on the 'Miniatur Wunderland' in 2000.

The set covers six regions including America , Switzerland , Scandinavia , Germany and the Austrian Alps.

The American section features giant models of the Rocky Mountains, Everglades, Grand Canyon…

…and Mount Rushmore.

The Swiss section has a mini-Matterhorn.

The Scandinavian part has a 4ft long passenger ship floating in a 'fjord'.

It is expected to be finished in 2014, when the train set will cover more than 1,800 square meters (19, 376 sq ft) and feature almost 13 miles of track, by which time detailed models of parts of France, Italy and the UK will be added.

It comprises 700 trains with more than 10,000 carriages and wagons. The longest train is 46ft long.

The scenery includes 900 signals, 2,800 buildings, 4,000 cars – many with illuminated headlights and 160,000 individually designed figures.

Thousands of kilograms of steel and wood was used to construct the scenery.

The 250,000 lights are rigged up to a system which mimics night and day by automatically turning them on and off.

The whole system is controlled from a massive high-tech nerve centre.

In total the set has taken 500,000 hours and more than US$1.8 million to put together, the vast majority of which has come from ticket sales.

Gerrit said: "Our idea was to build a world that men, woman, and children can be equally astonished and amazed in"…

Frederik added: "Whether gambling in Las Vegas , hiking in the Alps or paddling in Norwegian fjords, in Wunderland everything is possible".

Extreme Bad Road in Russia: Between Ukhta and Naryan-Mar

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 04:01 AM PDT

Russian federal highway Moscow city – Yakutsk City looks very modern when you start you journey from Moscow. But thousands of miles later, between the cities Ukhta and Naryan-Mar it just doesn't look like a road anymore. The worst thing about it is that you don't have any other choice – it's the only "road" there.

The funny part is that Ukhta is an important industrial city with plenty oil wells and as we know, oil=money. What's funny is that oil companies are too greedy to give money to build a good road, plus it's in their interests.

Donkey Fell From Sky Pics

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 03:46 AM PDT

Apparently, this donkey didn't get used to parachute jump. It was screaming loudly and the people on the beach were scared. A kid cried after seeing this scene. He asked his parents: "Why did they tie a donkey on a parachute and let him scream?"

Unfortunately, that donkey fell into the sea. He couldn't swim so he seemed dying after being dragged back to the beach.

The Return of Gundam

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 03:45 AM PDT

Remember that 60-foot RX78 Gundam mech that showed up in Tokyo's Shiokaze Park? Well, the guys at Bandai pieced it together once more, this time in Shizuoka. The truth is I missed the awesome-looking RX78, and I couldn't understand why they had to take it down in the first place. But that's not important anymore, because the Gundam statue is back, and this time it's brought a cool saber that shines at night. The newly assembled Gundam will be officially inaugurated on July 24 and it will remain in Shizuoka until January 10 2011.

Leaping Whale Crushes Yacht

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 03:43 AM PDT

Paloma Werner and Ralph Mothes, who operate the Cape Town Sailing Academy, were enjoying a day of sailing through Table Bay when a Southern Right Whale up to 45 ft long (about 14 m) breached the surface and landed on their boat. Luckily no one was hurt in the incident, but the boat will have to go in for some repairs. This species of whale is common to the area and was not attacking the boat

The Aircruise – Flying Hotel Concept by Seymourpowell

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 03:39 AM PDT

Seymourpowell revealed details of their Aircruise concept in which they dreamed up new transatlantic travel routes for kite-shaped airships that could herald a new era of luxury transport. The sketches show the craft floating above tall skyscrapers, huge deserts or wide oceans in a sustainable way with zero emissions.
Airships had their May in the 1930s with the famous German zeppelins. This new technology makes them increasingly attractive from an environmental standpoint and safer than their early forerunners. Silent and pollution free, the Aircruise combines solar power with a primary hydrogen drive.

Samsung plans to take off Seymourpowell's plans from the drawing board.
This colossal craft is designed to become a leisurely, environmentally friendly alternative to flying. However, the solar and hydrogen cell-powered craft will be in need of astronomical amounts of money to actually build it.

The idea of spending more time relaxing while getting from point A to point B does sound rather appealing compared to the typical frenzy of flying. As time is regarded as the most valuable good, the journey would be the reward getting away from everyday routine!
Seymourpowell based its design around a maximum of 100 passengers on board, making the journey an adventure in itself. Penthouse apartments, stylish bars and an array of glass viewing floors will be featured by the craft.

In the pictures you will see the beautiful city of San Francisco made of nothing but jelly. This is the brain child of Liz Haycock and you cannot but be impressed by the myriad of colors and the pain that must have gone into this huge project. She has made a lot of effort to make sure that every detail is taken care of and to see that all the important landmarks are made visible. You will see that she has not even missed on the details on the flag in one of the pictures.
